Flamboyant Cuttlefish (Metasepia pfefferi)
Related to both the squid and the octopus, cuttlefish are among the most intelligent organisms on the planet. The flamboyant cuttlefish are found in silty and sandy areas in the Indo-Pacific, but other species are found around the world. Structures called chromatophores in their skin allow them to have striking color changes. This species will often flash colors when disturbed and alternate stripes of color when at rest.
Flamboyant cuttlefish differ from most species in that they are known for their preference to “walk” along the bottom rather than swim. Another unique characteristic among all cuttlefish species is that they have a toxin. These cuttlefish are also smaller compared to other species, only growing up to 3.5-inches long, with females larger than males.
Fun Fact: The Atlantis Marine World Aquarium on Long Island was the first place to raise this species in captivity
